Listen up! Let's discuss 5 independent artists you should be listening to RIGHT NOW!

Updated: May 24, 2022

When Reverence was first conceptualised, we felt that it was a responsibility of the blog to showcase worthy independent artists. This would allow us the opportunity to point a spotlight on independent music on a neutral platform where genres weren’t the focus. Reverence prides itself on its diversity of genres from Rock to Hip Hop allowing all types of music to come across our doorstep for review or promotion.

When discussing music, it really comes down to personal taste and talking about what sounds good and what doesn’t to the individual. If you ask people what their favourite artists or sounds are, chances are you’ll be debating with them over your own tastes and preferences. This is where the fun with music begins. Conversations between friends sharing new music with one another in hopes that you will both like the artist and in turn you’ve just found a mate to go down to the next show together, it’s brilliant!

Here are five independent artists from different backgrounds that deserve a listen.

1. ERIN BUKU

Adelaide independent artist Erin Buku has emerged onto the RnB/soul scene with her single, Humble from her 5-track debut EP, Lessons in Love. Her voice is sweet and soulful combined with a boom bap style beat that reels you in within the first few moments of hearing it. Lessons in Love is self-produced by Erin and her husband Inkswel with Erin describing herself as a vocalist, producer and DJ. Erin and Inkswel lived and toured the UK as duo Planetself before Covid pushed them to come back home to Australia. We are excited to hear the rest of the tracks from Lessons in Love when it drops on June 3rd.

2. SHORTY MIC

Melbourne born and raised, hip hop artist Shorty Mic has hit the hip hop scene running, proving to be a hard-working artist who writes, produces, mixes, and masters all his own work, gaining a steady following with each release. Shorty Mic’s sound could be described as West Coast/New York/Detroit Hip hop with influences from Tupac, NWA, Ice Cube, Nate Dogg, Eminem, and Dr Dre imbedded in his own unique sound. There are not many artists in Australia that sound like him and that’s what attracts us to his music. He is currently in the studio writing new songs and if they’re anything like his last track released in April, Respect My Name, it’s going to be a definite crowd pleaser.

4. PATIENT SIXTY-SEVEN

Perth based Metalcore band, Patient Sixty-Seven have been making ruffles in the metal scene for the past couple of years after releasing their self-released EP Home Truths in 2020. They quickly gained a following in the scene and their Spotify has over 4 million total streams. Their cover of Dua Lipa’s IDGAF has almost 2.3million streams on Spotify alone. There is so much about this band that we love, but one of the main things is their attitude and interactions with their fans. They are awesome guys who are humble and kind to their fans and always have time to correspond and connect with their fans. If you’re a fan of metalcore music, we guarantee that you will love these guys as much as we do. New music is coming on the 20th of this month so check out their last single Fatebringer, it's definitely one of our favourites. Listen to Patient Sixty-Seven's song Fatebringer here.

Northlane have developed their sound over the past 10 years and have incorporated in recent years, more melodic singing and electronic instruments. They are touring nationally in June and start their American tour in July.
